Regional Trails

Akron is located in Northeastern Ohio, about 30 miles south of Cleveland. There are several long recreational trails in this area as well as paths within the local parks. Other communities in the area include Cuyahoga Falls and Kent.

Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath

The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail is a paved pathways that follow alongside the Ohio and Erie Canal in Northeastern Ohio. There is over 85 miles of pathway that goes through a beautiful area of Ohio south of Cleveland and goes through the middle of Akron. The paths form a large portion of the Ohio to Erie Trail that extends as far south as Cincinnati.

Summit Metro Parks Hike & Bike Trail

 The Summit Metro Parks Hike & Bike Trail is a 34-mile long system of paved pathways and designated streets in Summit County to the north of Cuyahoga Falls. The trail system was one of the earliest rails-to-trails system in the country and follows abandoned railroad right-of-ways. The north end of the Summit Metro Parks Hike & Bike Trail is located in Walton Hills where is connects to the Bedford Reservation Trail. The trail splits into two branches north of the community of Stow and there are separate sections of pathway in Munrow Falls and to the northeast of Stow.

Portage Hike & Bike Trail

The Portage Hike & Bike Trail is a system of trails located in Portage County, west of Akron. The trails go through the communities of Kent, Brady Lake and Ravenna.

The west end of the main 11-mile section of the Portage Hike & Bike Trail is located at Middlebury Road north of Northeast Avenue. This location is just down Middlebury Road from the east end of the Freedom Trail that heads south to Talmadge. This section of the trail system follows the Cuyahoga River, going through Fred Fuller Park in the middle of Kent.  North of Kent the trail heads to the east going past Towner's Wood then cross country through the north of Ravenna and goes past Ravenna High School. The east end of this section is located at County Road 167, just south of N. Freedom Street.

The trail system also has a section that goes through Kent State University.

A separate 1.25-mile long section of the Portage Hike & Bike Trail spans between Spell Road and Hudson Road. This trail connects to the Summit Metro Parks Hike & Bike Trail.

Freedom Trail

The Freedom Trail is a 7.5-mile long paved pathway that spans between Akron, Tallmadge and Kent. The Freedom Trail is a rail-trail that follows the route of an abandoned railroad right-of-way. The trail goes right past Tallmadge Circle, Lions Club Park, and past the Munroe Falls Metro PARK.

The southwest end of the Freedom Trail is located near the intersection of N. Union Street and N. Adams Street on the northeast side of Downtown Akron.  The northeast end of the Freedom Trail is located at Boel Drive, just north of Northeast Avenue. There is a trailhead with parking at this location. This is also the location of the west end of the Portage Hike & Bike Trail.
