Regional Trails

Kalamazoo and Portage are located in Kalamazoo County in Southwest Michigan. the cities are located to the west of Battle Creek and 36 miles east of Lake Michigan.

Kalamazoo River Valley Trail

The Kalamazoo River Valley Trail is a system of paved trails within the City of Kalamazoo.

One section that is 12.4-mile long paved pathway that travels through the natural areas of the Kalamazoo River. The trail along the river starts in the north at D Avenue E. From that point the trail heads south. The trail passes Markin Glen Park, Verburg Park, Sutherland Park, Downtown Comstock and ends at E. Michigan Avenue.

Another two sections of the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail head off to the north west. The 1-mile long southern portion stretched from N. Westnedge Avenue and W. Kalamazoo Avenue to Ravine Road. The 3-mile long northerly portion starts along Ravine Road and connects to the Kal-Haven Trail State Park at 10th Street N.

Kal-Haven Trail State Park

The Kal-Haven Trail is a 34.5-mile long mostly unpaved pathway that runs from Kalamazoo to South Haven on the shores of Lake Michigan. The trail was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and its route goes through the beautiful Southwestern Michigan countryside. Trail users will travel through thickly wooded areas, past farmland and through several small communities.

The southeast end of the Kal-Haven Trail connects to the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail system at 10th Street N to the north of W. H Avenue on the west side of Highway 131.

Portage Bikeway

The City of Portage has an extensive system of paved trails for bike riding and walking. There are trails along Portage Creek and other pathways that follow alongside major roadways.

The Portage Bikeway goes past several parks and through the natural areas along the creek. Points of interest along the Portage Bikeway include Blanch Hull Park, Loy Norrix High School, Portage Creek Bicnetnnial Park, The Crossroads Hopping Mall, Haverhill Park, Celery Flats, the Hayloft Thrater, Portage District Library, Portage Central High School, Portage Central Elementary School, South Westnedge Park and Bishops Bog Preserve.
