Regional Trails

The Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Trail is a 13-mile paved and unpaved trail that extends from a point just east of Lowell to Ionia in Central Michigan. The trail is part of the Fred Meijer River Valley Rail Trails system and was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way. The route includes views of the Grand River, miles of farmland, dense woodlands and wetlands. Outside of Ionia, there is bridge over the Grand River.

Conditions

The Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Trail is mostly paved but has a few unpaved portions. The trail is open for bike riding, hiking and running.

The Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Trail goes past the following communities: Lowell, Saranac and Ionia.

Nearby Trails

The Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Trail is part of the Fred Meijer River Valley Rail Trails and acts as a link between the Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail and the Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawasee Trail. In Ionia, there is access to local recreational trails.

Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail: this trail heads to the north from Lowell. The tow trails do not meet and trail users will need to travel along local streets for about 2.75 miles to get from one to the other.

Ionia River Trail: this is the local paved recreational trail in Ionia that follows along side the Grand River.

Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawasee Trail: this trail heads to the east from Ionia. The two trails don't meet, but there is a gap of 1.5 miles between them along local streets.

End Points

The west end of the Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Rail Trail is located at the intersection of Grand River Drive SE and Montcalm Avenue SE on the southeast side of Lowell. There is also a trailhead off of North Bridge Street and parking at Scheid Park in the community af Saranac.

The east end of the Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Rail Trail is located at W. Adams Street off of S Dexter Street in Ionia. This point is very close to the Ionia River Trail which you can travel along to Cleveland Street and connect with the Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawasee Trail. The trail has not been improved along the railroad right-of-way on the south side of Ionia to connect directly.
