Regional Trails

The Fred Meijer Heartland Trail is a 45.8-mile long paved trail that extends from Alma to Greenville in Central Michigan. The trail goes through miles of Michigan countryside, past farmland, woodlands, lakes and over creeks. The route includes a number of small farming communities.

The trail is a rail trail and was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way.

Conditions

The Fred Meijer Heartland Trail is paved the entire way. The trail is open for bike riding, walking and running. There are long remote sections with few road crossings or facilities. There is a gap in the trail to the north of Greenville where trail users will need to use the local roads to get to the next section.

Greenville Flat River Trail: the Greenville Flat River Trail wraps around the town of Greenvile and intersects the Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail which connects to the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail.

Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail: the two trails meet at N. Lafayette Street and W. Congress Street in Greenville. The Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail then heas south to Lowell.

Riverside Park Trail: this is a paved trail located in Alma, a block away from the east end of the Fred Meijer Heatland Trail.

End Points

The northeast end of the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail is located at Prospect Avenue near W. Center Street in the middle of Alma. There is a small trailhead with parking on Park Avenue. The trail then heads to the north and passes by Alma College. After leaving Alma, the trail travels west as far as Edmore then dips to the south.

There is a gap in the trail to the northeast of Greenville where trail uses need to travel along Lake Road and Peck Road to reach the next section. South of Peck Road, the trail makes a wide loop and ends at Lafayette Street in Greenville. At this point trail users can continue south on the Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail.
