Regional Trails

Ames is located 30 miles to the north of Des Moines in the center of the State of Iowa. The city is surrounded by rolling farmland and is home to Iowa State University.

The city has a large network of recreational trails for bike riding and walking. These trails often follow alongside mjor roadways or alongside creeks and rivers. The trails connect parks, natural areas, residential neighborhoods, schools and commercial centers.

Ada Hayden Heritage Park Trails

The Ada Hayden Heritage Park is located to the west of Grand Avenue the north side of Ames. The park has several miles of crushed rock unpaved trails and a 2.8-mile long paved pathway. The park has a large lake, thick forests and opend meadows. At the park there are parking areas, picnic facilities, restrooms and boating.

Skunk River Trails

Within Ames there are around 2 miles of paved pathways located alongside the South Skunk River. The pathways are located to the east of Duff Avenue and span between Duff Avenue and E. 13th Street. The pathways are located away from streets and traffic go past Inis Grove Park, Homewood Municipal Golf Course, North River Valley Park and South River Valley Park.

Squaw Creek Trails

There are over 2 miles of paved pathways located in the natural areas and local parks adjacent to Skunk Creek. This area is in the heart of Ames and adjacent to the campus of Iowa State University. The trails are situated to the east of Stange Road and span from Bruner Drive and S. 4th Street. The trails go past the Furman Aquatic Center, Brookside Park and Stuart Smith Park.
