The Great Western Trail is a 17.2 mile long paved pathway that spans between Des Moines and Martensdale in Central Iowa. The trail follows the route of an abandoned railroad right-of-way and goes through the farmland, through woodlands and wetlands to the south of Des Moines.


The Great Western Trail is paved for the entire route and is open for non-motorized use such as bike riding, walking and running. The trail has few road crossings and the route is located away from major roadways.


The Great Western Trail goes past the following communities: Des Moines, West Des Moines, Cumming, Norwalk, Churchville and Martensdale

Bill Riley Trail and Merideth Trail:  The Meridath Trail connects to the Great Western Trail at its north end and heads to the northeast allowing a connection to the Bill Riley Trail, Krudenier Trail, the River Walk and the Des Moines River Trail.

End Points

The north end of the Great Western Trail is located at Water Works Park to the northeast of the intersection of George Flagg Parkway and Park Avenue in Des Moines.

The south end of the trail is located along Iowa Avenue to wht west of West Street in Martensdale across fromthe Blue Devils Football Arena.
