Regional Trails

Iowa City is located in Johnson County in the eastern portion of the State if Iowa and is 106 miles east of Des Moines and 25 miles south of Cedar Rapids. The city is located along the Iowa River and is situated to the south of Coralville Lake.Other communities in the area include: Coralville, Tiffin and North Liberty.

This part of Iowa is very pretty with low rolling hills and areas of thick forests and tallgrass prairie scattered among the vast open farmland. Iowa City is also the home of the University of Iowa, whose campus spreads across much of the city.

Iowa City has a large network of recreational trails for bike riding and walking. These trails are located along the Iowa River or Clear Creek, run adjacent to major roadways or wander through the many large parks in the city.

Iowa River Corridor Trail

The Iowa River Corridor Trail is a system of trails that travels alongside the Iowa River for a portion of its route and spans across Iowa city from the north side to the south. The trail has over 13 miles of paved pathways that go past numerous parks, residential neighborhoods, the campus of the University of Iowa and Downtown Iowa City.

The trail connects to numerous other recreation trails along the way.

The north end of the Iowa River Corridor Trail is located along Mehaffey Bridge Road Northeast at the intersection with Cedar Springs Road. The south end of the trail wraps around Sand Lake at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area.

Clear Creek Trail

The Clear Creek Trail is a 4-mile long paved pathway that wanders through the natural areas and parks adjacent to Clear Creek on the west side of Iowa City. The trail spans from a point near 2nd Street and Deer Creek Road to the Iowa River Corridor Trail near 1st Avenue on the northwest side of the university campus. There are branches along the trail that reach out to residential neighborhoods and commercial centers. The trail goes past Coral Ridge Mall, Mormon Handcart Park and Hawkeye Recreation Field.
