Regional Trails

The Wabash Trace Nature Trail is a 62-mile long mostly unpaved pathway that extends from the southeast side of Council Bluffs, Iowa, to the Blanchard on the Iowa / Missouri border in Southwestern Iowa. The trail was constructed along an abandoned railroad bed.

The route of the trail takes you through Iowa's scenic Loess Hills area. The trail uses many old historic railroad bridges, goes through lush forest land with the trees creating a canopy overhead, past picturesque farmland and through small farming towns. You can do some bird-watching and catch a glimpse of the local wildlife. It is an exquisite place for an Autumn outing with the golden colors of the foliage.

Conditions

The Wabash Trace Nature Trail is mostly unpaved, with some paved sections in the urban areas. The trail is located far from roadways, has gentle grades and wide curves. Much of the trail has an improved surface of crushed limestone. There is a small fee associated with using the trail. The trail is open for non-motorized uses such as hiking, bike riding, horseback riding (in certain sections), cross country skiing and fishing. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed. The trail is open year round.
