Durango is located in La Plata County in Southwestern Colorado. The city is situated along the Animas River at the base of the La Plata Mountains. The beautiful Animas River Valley sits to the north with its dramatic red cliffs and lovely green valley floor. In the distance, the peaks of the San Juan Mountains are seen on the northern horizon. Durango is home to the Durango and Siverton Narrow Gauge Railroad that has authentic narrow gauge trains that travel through the valley and wind through the San Juans to reach the historic town of Silverton. Durango has a historic old west downtown area with shops and restaurants and is home to Fort Lewis College.

Durango has an exceptional recreational trail that travels through much of the city called the Animas River Trail. There are also walking paths up on the mesa above the city near Fort Lewis College. These trails along the rim of the mesa allow for views out over the historic city and have nice views of the La Plata Mountains and the Animas River Valley.

Animas River Trail

The Animas River Trail is a 7.5-mile long paved pathway that follows the route of the river through most of the Durango area. The trail starts 2.5 miles to the north of the downtown area. The trail follows the river which takes a loop just west of the downtown area. The trail then heads to the south side of Durango. This section is less congested and has fewer road crossings. Trail users will be delighted with the views of the surrounding rocky cliffs and the groves of cottonwoods and willows along the waterway.
