The Salt Creek Greenway Trail and the Salt Creek Trail are located to the west of Chicago. Both trails follow the route of Salt Creek as it meanders through the western suburbs.

Salt Creek Greenway Trail

The Salt Creek Greenway Trail is a 32-mile long paved pathway that is located in DuPage County on the west side of the Chicago Metropolitan area. The trail follows Salt Creek as it travels through several forest preserves.

Conditions

The Salt Creek Greenway is paved the entire way. The trail is open for bike riding and walking. There are some sections where trail users will need to travel along city streets to get to the next separate portion of the trail. the longest gap in the trail is from E. Wildwood Avenue in Villa Park to W. Madison Street in Elmhurst. The Illinois Prairie Path is located in this section.

The Illinois Prairie Path and the Great Western Trail both come within a few blocks of the Salt Creek Greenway Trail near E. Park Boulevard to the west of Kingery Boulevard.

The Salt Creek Greenway Trail also allows connections to the recreational trails withn Fullersburg County Forest Preserve.

End Points

The north end of the Salt Creek Greenway Trail is located at Bauman Court off of Mittel Drive just south of E. Thorndale Avenue in Wood Dale.

Near the south end of the Salt Creek Greenway Trail, trail users can use Canterberry Lane to connect with the Salt Creek Trail in Cook County.

The south end of the Salt Creek Greenway Trail is located at South York Street and Spring Road in Oak Brook. This location allows you to connect with trails in the Fullersburg County Forest Preserve.


Salt Creek Trail

The Salt Creek Trail is a 9.5-mile long system of paved pathways located in Cook County. The westerly section of the trail extends from Interstate 294 in Oak Brook to the Brookfield Zoo. It also travels through several wooded natural areas and connects with the local hiking trails. The easterly section of the Salt Creek Trail is located in the communities of Lyons and Forest View.

Conditions

The Salt Creek Trail is paved the entire way. The trail is open for bike riding, running and walking. The trail is not continuous and has separate sections.

End Points

The west end of the Salt Creek Trail is located at Canterberry Lane, just west of Interstate 294. This spot is just down the road from the Salt Creek Greenway Trail. The trail heads east through Bernis Woods and allows trail users to connect with the many trails within this natural area via a bridge over Salt Creek. The east end of the west portion of the Salt Creek Trail is on McCormick Avenue just north of 31st Street in Brookfield.

The easterly section of the Salt Creek Trail wraps around Ottawa Trail Woods on the east side of the community of Lyons. It starts at Ogden Avenue near Gage Avenue and ends at Portage Woods.
