The trail travels through miles of forests, over wetlands, through rural communities and farmland. Much of the trail was constructed along the abandoned right-of-way of the former Putnam Division of the New York Central Railway, also referred to as "Old Put".  There are artifacts of the historic railway including historic trestle bridges and restored railway stations.

Conditions

The North County Trailway is paved the entire route with a surface of asphalt. The trail is open for bike riding, running and walking. Much of the trail is located away from roadways and there are relatively few road crossings.
