The Michael Castle Trail & Ben Cardin Recreational Trail are paved pathways that create a 14.2-mile long trail that follows the north bank of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal in Northern Delaware. The trails connect Chesapeake City in Maryland to Delaware City along the Delaware River.

The Ben Cardin Recreational Trail is 1.8-miles long and is the Maryland portion of this trail system. The Michael Castle Trail is the 12.4-mile long section of the canal trail located in the State of Delaware. The east end of the Michael Castle Trail meets up with the trails in Delaware City that continue for another 0.6-miles along the canal and reach to Fort Delaware State Park on the Delaware River.

The trails provide a nice way to get some outdoor exercise away from traffic and congestion. There are beautiful views of the canal and the bridges that cross the canal along with the boat traffic. Chesapeake City and Delaware City are quaint and picturesque villages along the waterfront. Lums Pond State Park is located just to the north and has hiking trails that wander through the woodlands.

Conditions

The Michael Castle Trail and Ben Cardin Recreational Trail are now paved for the entire route. The trails are open for bike riding, walking and running. There are no street crossings along the canal portion other than in the parking areas. There are some unpaved access paths and side routes along the trail.

End Points

The west end of the Ben Cardin Recreational Trail is located at the end of Lock Street in Chesapeake City in Maryland.

The east end of the Michael Castle Trail is located at Canal Street and 5th Street in Delaware City where it meets the trail system that reaches to Battery Park and Fort Delaware State Park on the Delaware River.
