Regional Trails

The Capital City State Trail is an 11-mile long paved trail system located on the south side of the City of Madison in South Central Wisconsin. The trail connects to numerous other trails in the Madison area. A large chunk of the trail goes by the Capital Springs State Recreation Area. The trail goes past several local parks, past residential neighborhoods and through some lovely natural areas.

Conditions

The Capital City State Trail is paved trail for its entire length. The trail is open for walking, running, bike riding and dog walking. Portions of the trail require a Wisconsin State Trail Pass for cyclists and roller bladers over the age of 16.

There are a number of road crossings along the trail. The trail has a pedestrian / cyclist overpass for crossing Fish Hathery Road near McKee Road. At this point there is a gap in the trail and trail users must use Glacier Valley Road to reach the next section of the trail. There is an underpass for crossing Highway 18/12 near John Nolen Road.

The Capital City State Trail allows for connections with a number of other recreational trails in Madison. It also has numerous access paths that extend into the local neighborhoods. The trail also intersects multi-use paths along some of the major roadways.

Cannonball Path & Military Ridge State Trail: the Cannonball Path and the Capital City State Trail intersect at Arrow Head Park. The park is located to the east of the Verona Road (Highway 18) and Williamsburg Way interchange. The Cannonball Path connects to the Military Ridge State Trail to the south of the park.

Badger StateTrail: the two trails intersect at Arrow Head Park to the east of the Verona Road (Highway 18) and Williamsburg Way interchange. The Badger State Trail heads to the south as far as the Wilsconsin / Illinois border.

John Nolen Path & Wingra Creek Path: these trails can be reached from the north end of the Capital City State Trail near Turville Point.

End Points

The west end of the Capital City State Trail is located at Williamsburg Way, just west of Highway 18. There is an underpass for crossing the highway. Just east of the underpass the trail goes past Arrow Head Park. In this area there is a junction of several trails. The Cannonball Path, the Southwest Commuter Path, the Capital City State Trail and the Badger State Trail all convene in this one area.

The north end of the trail is located at Turnville Point Conservation Park along John Nolen Drive.
