The Henry Hudson Trail is a 23.3 mile long mostly paved pathway system located in East-Central New Jersey. The route includes several separate sections of pathways that span between Freehold and Atlantic Highlands.

The Henry Hudson Trail is part of the Monmouth County Park System and was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and goes through the New Jersey countryside passing several local communities. The trail follows the route of an abandoned railroad right-of-way goes through farmland and across wetlands and over streams.

The Henry Hudson Trail consists of four separate sections with the northernmost section located along the shores of Sandy Hook Bay.

Conditions

The Henry Hudson Trail is paved for most of the route. The trail is open for bike riding and walking. Much of the route is located away from streets and traffic with overpasses for crossing some of the major roadway. There are numerous street crossings within the developed areas.

There are some lengthy gaps in the trail in the area east of Marlboro Township and through the city of Matawan. The section of the trail along the shore in Atlantic Highlands is not paved.

Sandy Hook Multi-Use Path: the paved pathway system of trails for Sandy Hook is located 1.7 miles to the east of the easterly end of the Henry Hudson Trail in Atlantic Highlands.

End Points

There are four separate sections of the Henry Hudson Trail. The sections are separated by long gaps.

South Section: The south section is close to 6 miles long. The south end of this section is located at E. Main Street, east of Jackson Terrace in Freehold. The north end of this section is located at Big Brook Park off of Newman Springs Road in Marlboro Township. There is a 1.6 mile gap in the trail at this point. Trail users can travel along Newman Springs Road and then N. Main Street in Marlboro Township to get to the next section.

Central Section: The central section is 4.8 miles long. The south end of this section is located at the intersection of Main Street and Wyncrest Road in Marlboro Township. The north end of this section is located at Stillwell Street, southeast of Orchard Street in Matawan. There is a 1.6 mile long gap to the next section of trial. Trail users can use Broad Street and Lower Main Street then Gerard Avenue to get to the next section to the north.

North Section: The north section of the trail is 9.7 miles long. The west end of this section is located at Broadway and Clark Street in Keyport. This location is across from  Oakshades Park. The east end of this section is located at Avenue D, just north of Valley Drive E in Atlantic Highlands.

Atlantic Highlands Shoreline Section: this section is 2 miles long and mostly unpaved with a gravel surface. The west end is located at Center Avenue and Henessey Boulevard in Atlantic Highlands. The east end is located at Popamora Point on Shore Drive near the Sandy Hook Bay Marina.
