Regional Trails

The New River Trail State Park is the location for the New River Trail, a 57-mile long unpaved pathway in Southwestern Virginia. The route of the trail follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way and the New River. The trail goes through four counties and past numerous communities. You can watch canoes and kayaks along the river, visit the Foster Falls Furnace, go through a tunnel and experience the historic old steel railroad bridges bridges over the river.

Conditions

The New River Trail is mostly unpaved and open for non-motorized uses such as walking, bike riding and horseback riding. The surface is compacted crushed stone. There are a number of wooden bridges for crossing the river and creeks.

Nearby Trails

Dora Trail: Near its northern terminus, the New River Trail intersects Dora Trail in the town of Pulaski. The Dora Trail then extends to S. Washington Avenue in the center of town.

The New River Trail goes past the following Virginia communities: Pulaski, Draper, Hiwassee, Alisonia, Austinville, Fries and Galax.

End Points

The north end of the New River Trail is located on the southeast side of Pulaski at Xaloy Way.

A 5-mile long branch of the trail breaks off near the south end and heads over to the town of Fries.

The south end of the New River Trail is located at W. Stuart Drive in Galax.
