Regional Trails

The Greenway is a system of paved recreational trails that extends over 20 miles and follows the Red River and the Red Lake River in both Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. The trail system wanders through the natural areas along the rivers and goes through a number of local parks. There are bridges for crossing from the North Dakota side to the Minnesota side.

The Greenway stretches from the Riverside Dam to the north of Riverside Park to 52nd Avenue South.


The Greenway is paved for the entire route. The trail is open for bike riding, running and walking. There are few road crossings and most of the trail is located away from traffic and congestion.

River crossings are available at Riverside Dam, Demers Avenue Bridge a pedestrian bridge near the Lincoln Park Golf Course and at 3rd Avenue SE.


The Greenway goes through the following communities: Grand Forks, North Dakota and East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Nearby Trails

Gateway Drive Bikeway: this trail heads to the east from the 7th Avenue Access trail head and extends to the west as far as N. 55th Street. It connects to the multi-use path along N. 55th Street as well as the English Coulee Fitness Trail.

English Coulee Fitness Trail: this trail is a 3-mile long paved pathway that runs through Grand Forks from U.S. Highway 2 to 24th Avenue South, with a gap in the trail at Demers Avenue. The trail is part of the Fitness Trail, which is a system of paved pathways within Grand Forks. The English Coulee Trail and The Greenway do not intersect, but connections can be made with the multi-use paths that follow the major streets.

End Points

The north end of The Greenway is at the bridge over the Red River to the north of the Riverside Dam.

The South end of the trail is located along Belmont Road between Rivers Edge Drive and Desiree Drive. Another branch of the trail heads off along the Red Lake River and stops at 8th Street SE.
