Regional Trails

The Harlem Valley Rail Trail is located in Southeastern New York State. Currently there are two separate segments of paved trail that have been developed totaling 15.8 miles. The north segment is located near Copake Falls and the south segment stretches between Millerton and Amenia. The trail was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and there are plans to expand the trail system to a total of 46 miles and eventually reach as far north as Chatham. The route takes you through dense woodlands, through open farmland, past historic railroad stations and through a few local communities.

Conditions

The Harlem Valley Rail Trail is a paved trail open for non-motorized use such as bike riding, running and walking. Horses are not permitted. The trail goes cross-country for much of the route and there are relatively few road crossings.

There is an 8.5-mile long gap between the north and south section and trail users will need to use local roadways to reach the other section of the trail.

The Harlem Valley Rail Trail goes past the following communities: Copake Falls, Boston Corner, Millerton, Amenia and Wassaic.

End Points

The north end of the northerly section of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail is located just south of Orphan Farm Road. There is a trailhead with parking at this location. The south end of this section is located at Under Mountain Road, there is a trailhead at this location as well.

The north end of the southerly section of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail is located on the south side of Main Street near N. Center Street in Millerton. There is parking near the old train depot. The south end of the southerly section is located at the Wassaic MTA Station. Parking is free on weekends at the station.
