Grand Island has a system of over 8 miles of recreational trails for bike riding and walking. There are paved and unpaved pathways in many locations throughout the city for getting about town, enjoying the outdoors or for commuting to work or school.

Dark Island Trail

The Dark Island Trail is a 8.4-mile long unpaved pathway that spans between Central City and Marquette. The trail follows the route of an abandoned railroad right-of-way and includes a long bridge that spans the Platte River. The trail crossed through Central City then across farmland and natural areas along the river. There are only a few road crossings.

The northern 3 miles trail has been improved with crushed / compacted stone within Central City and through the natural areas on the north and south bank of the river. To the south of E 27 Road the trail has a more natural surface suitable for mountain bikes and hiking.
