Butte is located in Silver Bow County in Southwestern Montana. Butte is located along Interstate 15 and Interstate 90, an 85-mile drive west of Bozeman. This is a historical area full of old mining relics and modern copper and molybdenum mining operations.

The City of Butte has three extensive recreational trails for bike riding, running and walking.

Silver Bow Creek Greenway

The Silver Bow Creek Greenway is a system of separate paved pathways that extend for over 26-miles along Silver Bow Creek between Butte and Warm Springs Ponds. Their are plans to connect the separate sections in the future. The trails system is a part of a Super Fund site to clean up the corridor from mining operations and improve it for both wildlife, historical significance and recreational opportunities. The trail is located well away from roadways and congestion. It travels through the natural corridor of the meandering Silver Bow Creek.

Currently, the Silver Bow Creek Greenway has three separate completed sections of paved pathway. There are large parking areas with restrooms at two of the trailheads.

The longest section of the Silver Bow Creek Greenway is 3.6-miles long and extends from Santa Claus Road, just west of Interstate 15 and south of the city, to a point just south of Missler Road where it goes under Interstate 15. There is a large parking area with restroom at the east end and at  the midpoint trailhead off of Grizzly Trail.

The next completed section is 1.2-miles long and is located just east of the community of Ramsay. A third 1.5-mile long completed section lies 14 miles west of Butte and stretches between Fairmount Road and Crackerville Road to the west of Interstate 90.

BA&P Hill Trail

The BA&P Hill Trail is a 5.4-mile long paved pathway that starts at the Silver Bow Creek Greenway then heads northeast to go through the north side of Butte. The northern portion of the trail wanders along the top of the huge Berkely Pit mining operation area. BA&P stands for the Butte Anaconda and Pacific Railway.

The BA&P Hill Trail goes close to the following points of interest:

Silver Bow Creek Greenway Trailhead
Alumni Field
HPER Complex
Montana Tech campus
Anselmo Mine
Mountain Con Mine
The Granite Mountain Speculator Mine Memorial

The southwest end of the BA&P Trail is located along Grizzly Trail to the east of Bobcat Trail. This point is close to the Silver Bow Creek midpoint trailhead.  The northeast end of the trail is located along Alexander Street on the northeast side of the city.

Blacktail Creek Trail

The Blacktail Creek Trail is a 3.7-mile long paved pathway located on the southeast side of Butte. The northern end of the trail is located along Civic Center Road near Texas Avenue. The trail takes a sharp jog to the north of George Street and then follows the natural area along the creek. The south end of the Blacktail Creek Trail is located at Father Sheehan Park at the intersection of Phillips Street and Meede Avenue.
