Jackson is located in the middle of the State of Mississippi. There are a number of recreational trails located on the north side of the metropolitan area. Most of these recreational trails are located alongside major roadways.

Natchez Trace Parkway Trail

The Natchez Trace Parkway Trail is an 11.4-mile long paved pathway that runs adjacent to the roadway in a historcally significant corridor for the Old South. The trail wanders through densely forested areas. The trail spans from a point to the north of W. Country Line Road to the Natchez Trace Overlook on the Ross R. Barnett Reservoir.

The trail is located a distance from the roadway and wanders through miles of natural areas away from congestion and traffic. The eastern portion of the trail connects to recreational trails along some of the major roadways, goes past residential neighborhoods, parks and schools.

The Natchez Trace Parkway is a 444-mile recreational road and scenic drive located in Mississippi and Tennessee. Its route roughly follows the "Old Natchez Trace" a historic travel corridor used by American Indians, "Kaintucks," European settlers, slave traders, soldiers, and future presidents. Visitors can drive the scenic route or enjoy hiking, biking, horseback riding, and camping in this area.
