Regional Trails

The Sunrise Prairie Regional Trail and Hardwood Creek Regional Trail combine to form a 25-mile long paved pathway that spans between North Branch and Hugo in Chisago and Washington Counties in Eastern Minnesota. The trails were constructed along the former Burlington Northern Railroad right-of-way and travel through the farmland, rural communities, lakes and natural areas to the northeast of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The Sunrise Prairie Regional Trail is 15 miles long and located in Chisago County and spans between North Branch and the northern boundary of Forest Lake. The Hardwood Creek Regional Trail is 10 miles long and located in Washington County and spans between the northern boundary of Forest Lake and Hugo. The southern end of the Hardwood Creek Regional Trail connects to local recreational trails in Hugo that then head to the east to the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Park Reserve.

Conditions

The Sunrise Prairie Regional Trail and Hardwood Creek Regional Trail are paved for the entire route. The trails are open for bike riding, running and walking. The northern portion of the route is located away from roadways with the occasional road crossing while the southern portion follows alongside State Highway 61.

Frenchman Road Multi-Use Path: this trail is located alongside Frenchman Road in Hugo and connects to the Hardwood Creek Regional Trail. The Frenchman Road Multi-Use Path then heads to the east and connects to the trail along Main Street. This trail goes past the trails at Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Park Preserve.

End Points

The north end of the Sunrise Prairie Regional Trail is located along St. Croix Trail to the west of Forest Boulevard in North Branch. The south end of the trail is located at 240th Street and State Hghway 61 on the north side of Forest Lake.

The north end of the Hardwood Creek Regional Trail is located at 240th Street and State Hghway 61 on the north side of Forest Lake. The south end of the trail is located at U. S. Highway 61 and 140th Street North in Hugo.
