The Gateway State Trail is an 18-mile long paved trail that spans between the cities of St. Paul and Stillwater in Southeastern Minnesota. The trail connects to multiple other regional and local trails. It passes through urban and residential areas on the western end and through dense forests and open agricultural land on the eastern end. 

Much of the Gateway State Trail is built along abandoned railroad beds and it has gentle grades and long straight stretches. Many people use it for commuting into St. Paul or to many of the other business areas and schools along its route.

Conditions

The Gateway State Trail is open for non-motorized use. It is used by bike riders, walkers and runners.  Keep in mind that there are long stretches of trail that are remote and have no services. Bring plenty of water and any other necessary supplies with you.

Trout Brook Regional Trail: the two trails intersects to the south of Arlington Avenue in St. Paul.

Phalen Lake Regional Park Trail: the two trails intersect just west of Highway 61 in St. Paul.

Keller Regional Park Trail: the two trails intersect just west of Highway 61 in St. Paul.

Bruce Vento Regional Trail: the two trails intersect to thw northwest of the intersection of Frost Avenue and English Street in Maplewood.

75th Street Multi-Use Trail: the two trails intersect just west of Jamaca Avenue in Stillwater.

Browns Creek State Trail: the trails intersect to the southwest of Dellwood Road near Lake Masterman in Stillwater.

Norell Avenue Trail: the northeast end of the Gateway State Trail intersects Norell Avenue in Stillwater.

End Points

The southwest end of the Gateway State Trail is located across from Cayuga Park on E. Cayuga Street, just west of Interstate 35E in St. Paul. This location is about one mile north of Downtown St. Paul.

The northeast end of the trail is located at Pine Point Regional Park along Route 55 in Stillwater.
