The Southwick Rail Trail & Columbia Greenway Rail Trail form an 8.9-mile long paved pathway in South Central Massachusetts. The trail starts in Westfield, travels trhough Southwick and extends to the border with Connecticut. At the border, the trail meets up with the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail which travels another 20 miles to the south to Farmington, Connecticut. The Southwick Rail Trail & Columbia Greenway Rail Trail were constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and travel through the lovely Massachusetts countryside.

The Columbia Greenway Trail starts along Main Street in Downtown Westfield, crosses the Little River and travels through the residential areas on the south side of town. South of Shaker Road, the two trails meet near trailhead with a large parking area. The Southwick Rail Trail then continues south, going past more residential areas, schools, farmland, woodlands and Congamond Lakes. The Southwick Rail Trail stops at the border with Connecticut where trail users can continue heading south on the paved Farmington Canal Heritage Trail.

Conditions

The Southwick Rail Trail & Columbia Greenway Rail Trail are paved the entire route with a surface of asphalt. There are some road crossings, but for the most part the trail travels away from major roadways. The trails are open for non-motorized uses such as bike riding, running and walking.

Farmington Canal Heritage Trail: the two trails meet at the Connecticut border to the east of State Highway 202. The paved Farmington Canal Heritage Trail then heads south through the beautiful Connecticut countryside as far as Farmington to the west of Hartford.

End Points

The north end of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail is located along Main Street to the east of Broad Street in Downtown Westfield. The south end of the trail is located to the south of Shaker Road on the west side of the Shaker Farms Golf Course.

The north end of the Southwick Rail Trail is located to the south of Shaker Road on the west side of the Shaker Farms Golf Course. The south end is located at the Connecticut border, 1.2 miles to the east of State Highway 202. There is a nearby trailhead with ample parking for the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail along Phelps Road to the east of Quarry Road in Connecticut.
