Columbia is located in Howard County in Central Maryland, 15 miles to the southeast from Downtown Baltimore. Other communities within this area include Clarksville, Ellicott City and Elkridge.

Columbia and the surrounding area has a vast network of neighborhood walking paths as well as recreational trails that wrap around lakes or follow creeks.

Patuxent Branch Trail

The Patuxent Branch Trail is a 4.6-mile long unpaved pathway that spans between Lake Elkhorn and Savage Park on the south side of Columbia. The trail wanders through natural areas of thick woodlands alongside the Patuxent Branch waterway. The trail connects to several other local trails along the way.

At its north end the Patuxent Branch Trail connects to the trail that wraps around Lake Elkhorn. From this location the trail goes under the Broken Land Parkway and then under the Patuxent Freeway. The trail goes past office complexes and residential neighborhoods. Farther to the south, the trail passes Patuxent Valley Middle School and Bollman Bridge Elementary School. The south end of the trail is located at Savage Park on Fair Street.

Centennial Lake and Centennial Park

There are several miles of pathways located in Centennial Park and that wrap around Centennial Lake in Ellicott City. This area has picnic facilities and athletic fields.
