Oskaloosa is located in Mahaska County about 55 miles southeast of Des Moines in Central Iowa. The city is home to William Penn University.

Mahaska Community Recreation Trail

Oskaloosa has a paved recreational trail system named the Mahaska Community Recreation Trail. The trail is over 12-miles long and consists of a number of separate segments connected with roadways. The trail is open for bike riding, running and walking.

Much of the trail is located away from streets and congestion. The route includes a long stretch that wanders through the natural areas alongside Spring Creek. The route also includes several local parks, schools, the William Penn campus and residential neighborhoods. A number of underpasses allow trail users to cross busy roadways safely.

The Mahaska Community Recreation Trail goes past the following points of interest.

Volksweg Trail

The Volksweg Trail is a 13-mile long paved pathway that is located 18 miles northwest of Oskaloosa. The trail takes a meandering route along the north side of Lake Red Rock near the community of Pella.

The eastern end of the Volksweg Trail is located along University Street at W. 5th Street in Pella and the western end is located near Cordova Park. The trail follows alongside Idaho Drive and 198th Place. The trail follows alongside the Des Moines River south of the lake and goes past the dam for the reservoir. After the dam, the trail wanders through wooded areas and goes past campgrounds and marinas and travels alongside County Road G28. The trail does go up and down multiple hills.
