Regional Trails

The Iowa River Corridor Trail is a system of over 13-miles of paved pathways located in Iowa City in Johnson County, in eastern Iowa. The trail system starts in North Liberty, crosses through Iowa City, goes through the downtown area, then heads south to wrap around Sand Lake at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area on the south side of the city.

The Iowa River Corridor Trail goes through miles of natural area alongside the river, past several local parks, past the campus of the University of Iowa, and past office buildings, shops and restaurants of Downtown Iowa City.


The Iowa River Corridor Trail is paved for the entire route.The trail is open for bike riding, running and walking.

There is a long stretch of the trail that follows alongside Dubuque Street. The trail has a number of branches and the trail's route takes it through the congested Downtown Iowa City area with numerous road crossings.


The Iowa River Corridor Trail goes past the following communities: New Liberty and Iowa City.

North Liberty Recreation Trail: the two trails do not intersect, but are very close to each other within the community of New Liberty.

Clear Creek Trail: the two trails meet just east of 1st Avenue to the north of 2nd Street on the northwest side of Downtown Iowa City.

Highway 6 Multi-Use Path: the two trails intersect just south of the bridge of Highway 6 in the downtown area.

Waterworks Prairie Park Trails: the park is located along Dubuque Street NE on the north side of Interstate 80.

End Points

The north end of the Iowa River Corridor Trail is located along Mehaffey Bridge Road NE at Cedar Springs Drive in the community of New Liberty.

The south end of the trail is located at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area off of Sand Road SE.
