Regional Trails

The Pequonnock River Trail is a system of paved and unpaved pathways located in southwestern Connecticut. The trail consists of several segments spans 15 miles between Bridgeport and Newtwon. The trail exists in multiple separate pathways connected by local roadways.

In Bridgeport, the Pequonnock River Trail is a paved path that follows alongside Housatonic Avenue for 1.2 miles. There is also a 4.2-mile long section that travels past the zoo and the athletic fields of Beardsley Park on Main Street before tucking under Route 8. The trail then continues north going past Unity Park and under Highway 15. This section has a short gap at White Plains Road, but picks up again at Twin Brooks Park in Trumbull.

In Trumbull, there is a 0.5-mile section of paved pathway at Twin Brooks Park. A 4.5-mile long unpaved stretch exists between Pequonnock River Valley State Park in Trumbull and Old Mine Park in Monroe. This stretch of the trail travels through natural wooded areas, away from traffic and roadways.

Another 2.4-mile long unpaved section is located on the north side of Monroe. This stretch also travels through natural areas away from roadways and goes past Wolfe Park and Great Hollow Lake. The last section of the trail is 1.3-miles long and is located just south of Newtown.

Conditions

The Pequonnock River Trail has paved and unpaved sections. The sections are separated. The trail is open for bike riding, running and walking.

Some sections are adjacent to roadways, others wander through forested areas, local parks or past residential and commercial areas.

There are several separate trails within the Pequonnock River Trail system of state designated greenways.

The southern end end of the Pequonnock River Trail system is located at Water Street and Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport.

The northern end of the trail system is located 3/4 of a mile north of Pepper Street in Monroe.
